Although we currently assist a significant number of pupils with some level of fee assistance, we aspire to fund many more, enabling King’s to remain a diverse community, drawn from many backgrounds. In 1912, the school pioneered a system funded by Surrey County Council whereby bright boys from Surrey won places at King’s, irrespective of family wealth. As the centenary of these Surrey Scholarships approaches we hope that once again King’s may become a leading proponent of diversity.
As we seek to widen access, we are aiming to introduce a range of bursaries to support disadvantaged families for whom fee subsidies of up to 100% may be appropriate. We also intend to offer bursaries to talented children of those middle-class professionals (for example, teachers, police officers, and health workers) who have been priced out of the market by the steady increase in independent school fees. This range of bursarial provision will allow us to maintain the balance and diversity of intake that makes the school distinctive and successful.
Scope exists for benefactors to endow named bursaries offered in perpetuity or those relating to a particular subject or category.
